I’m (almost) in

So the surgeon general finally cleared me to join the Air Force :)

Now I just need to take the DLAB language test and then pick my job, I’m thinking either Crypto Linguist or Space Systems Operations

Almost forgot

I got my first tattoo, it’s my wife’s name on my ring finger instead of a wedding ring.

My first tat

My first tat

BTW, it did not hurt at all, it felt like I was being lightly pinched

Just need a title…

All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy. All work and no play make Sean a dull boy.  All work and no play make Sean a dull boy…

Election, etc.

Well Barack Obama won the election and it feels great, though I’m disappointed that my current state of residence, Georgia, went to McCain/Palin.

Also, I finished Anathem, though I still need to read the appendices.  Overall I would say it was a pretty good book.  I liked all of the discussions of philosophy and physics in it.  I also read Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, I really liked this comic although I thought the ending was a bit abrupt.

I’m still waiting to hear from the surgeon general to see if I get in to the Air Force.

Further Proof that McCain is out of Touch

So John McCain at many of his recent rallies has made one of his main criticisms of Barack Obama is that Sen. Obama wants a more progressive tax system that will “redistribute wealth” from voters to others.  This shows that Sen. McCain is out of touch because this will only win him support among an small group of people.  Because under the Bush years real wages have dropped and the majority of income increases have been among millionaires.  Unlike in the mid to late 20th Century when wages grew for nearly everyone, the vast majority of the voting population has had their income drop under the economic policies of the Bush Administration which, John McCain wishes to continue.

In fact this argument should actually help Sen. Obama because now that the wealth is concentrated in fewer hands the people who would benefit from a redistribution of wealth far outnumber those that would have to pay the increased taxes.

As E.J Dionne said paying taxes is the price we pay to have good infrastructure and law and order, etc.

I’m such a little kid sometimes

So my wife and I went to the bookstore the other day and I saw Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling and I wanted it real bad.  But no way was I gonna pay cover price.  But seriously Bret “The Hitman” Hart was my favorite wrestler when I was little (I was so jealous that my cousin had the sunglasses) and he still occupies a piece of my wrestling life to this day.

Also, I’ve been playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots pretty much non-stop the last week and a half.  I just killed Vamp earlier tonight (well technically Raiden did, but I made Vamp no longer immortal, so…)

Obama-McCain Debate No. 2

I think that John McCain is glad that Obama didn’t accept his invitation to do a bunch of town hall meetings starting back in the summer.  If they had done that he’d have a statistically immesuarable poll rating.  I mean Barack Obama just wiped the floor with John McCain in both style and substance.  The pundits had said that McCain had the advantage because he does town halls all the time, except this time it was not a pre-screened, self-selected audience with an already favorable attitude.  Rather it was a somewhat more random cross-section of potential voters who support either one candidate or the other or have yet to make up their minds who asked questions that weren’t planted by a campaign worker so that he could just spit out his talking points.  Also he looked totally uncomfortable on the stage and seemed unsure of his answers.

Obama-McCain Debate No. 1

Overall I was disappointed with the first presidential debate between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain.  They both pretty much stuck to their stump-speech outlines and rarely engaged one another directly.  Also, Obama has yet to deal with what I think is his one weakness, he speaks in a too educated fashion, which is fine for someone like me that is really interested in what a political candidate has to say but will turn off a lot of people because of the multi-syllabic words and long-windedness.  I think Sen. Obama needs to re-read (I’m sure he’s read it at least once in his life) George Orwell’s essay Politics and the English Language.  One of the main themes of which is to not use a long word with a vague meaning when a short one with a precise meaning will work.

Anathem pt. 2

So I’m about one-third of the way through Anathem and it is totally awesome in a super-nerdy way!  The concent which is the location where the book starts out is like a monastary for geeks, it’s great.

Anathem

So I picked up Neal Stephenson’s new book Anathem, I’m really looking forward to reading it.  I finished The BaroqueCycle, earlier  this year and it is the best book(s) ever (I really need to write out a full review of this)!  I’ve also really enjoyed all of his other books that I’ve read including Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon.
